What is an SSL certificate?
SSL is the abbreviation for Secure Sockets Layer, the standard technology being used for transmitting encrypted information accross the internet.
The technology was developed back in the middle of the nineties and is nowadays an international recognised security standard. Actually, SSL is today a must if you are looking to secure sensitive information such as credit card data and passwords, and the standard is therefore supported by virtually all types of browsers and servers.
How does an SSL certificate work?
When a person visits a website secured with an SSL certificate, an SSL handshake between the visiting browser and the server of the website occurs. The browser and the server examine a number of parameters, and if these parameters are consistent with the standard, a secure, encrypted connection gets established between the visiting browser and the website’s server.
An SSL certificate is tied to the server and the common name of the website. This means that you can use the same certificate for www.company.com/info and www.company.com/shop, as the common name is the same. But you will need two certificates for shop.company.com and info.company.com, as these are two different common names. Furthermore, you need an SSL certificate per server that you are looking to secure. So if want to secure e.g. www.company.com on two servers, two SSL certificates will be required.
Why should I install an SSL certificate on my website?
If you accept payments on your website, or if users have to enter sensitive information such as e.g. address or password, you will need to install an SSL certificate in order to encrypt the communication. Without an SSL certificate, you might risk that other persons can see the information entered. This corresponds to sending a pin code or other sensitive information in a see through envelope – everyone will be able to see the content of the letter.
Apart from encrypting information, an SSL certificate has another and very important function, which is to show your website’s visitor that your company actually exists, and that the website does belongs to your company. An SSL certificate gets issued after a thorough authentication process during which the CA controls that your company has the right to use the domain name that you are looking to secure, and that your company is legally registered. Furthermore, we also check that your company is aware of the technical contact person ordering the certificate.
There are several ways for visitors to verify that an SSL certificate is installed on the website. In the address bar the URL begins with https instead of http, and furthermore there is a yellow padlock in the lower right corner or next to the address bar (the placement depends in the browser type). Furthermore, with EV SSL certificates, the address bar in modern browsers turns green and displays the name of the company owning the website.
Where should I install an SSL certificate?
As mentioned above, it is recommended to install an SSL certificate on all websites where users enter sensitive information such as credit card data, addresses etc. Furthermore, it is important to install an SSL certificate on applications that the users log into with a username and/or a password. Of course you should also secure your intranet against hackers, and finally SSL certificates are also used on servers that users access with mobile devices.
