 What is a Wildcard Certificate?

An SSL certificate is tied to the server and qualified domain name (FQDN) of the website. You will therefore need one certificate per FQDN that you are looking to secure. If the certificate’s common name and the FQDN on your website do not correspond, users get an error message.

Many companies have structured their website in a way so that they have one main domain like e.g. company.com and a lot of subdomains like e.g. shop.company.com, www.company.com and secure.company.com. Each subdomain requires a separate certificate.

A Wildcard Certificate is an SSL certificate enabling you to secure an unlimited number of subdomains and servers with one certificate. You are therefore be able to secure e.g. shop.company.com, www.company.com and secure.company.com with one Wildcard Certificate issued to *.company.com, what not only saves you money, but also saves you time for ordering, installing and administrating the certificates.

With Secorio’s Wildcard Certificate you can secure an unlimited number of subdomains.

How strong is the encryption of Secorio's Wildcard Certificates?

You can choose between two different Wildcard Certificates from Secorio: the Wildcard Certificate and the Wildcard SGC Certificate. The encryption strength of the Wildcard Certificate corresponds to the encryption strength of the normal Standard Certificate. You can therefore obtain a minimum encryption of 128 bit with new browsers and new operating systems. With the Wildcard SGC Certificate the encryption strength corresponds to the Premium SGC Certificate what means that all users will obtain a minimum encryption of 128 bit, no matter which browser and which operating system they use. Read more about encryption strength and SGC here.
